Why do you book travel arrangements? Will you be visiting someone, exploring a totally new destination or maybe you will be returning to a location you just love so much. Why you travel is up to you and what you pay for it is also up to you. You can book online and just take the first result for a flight and accommodations that shows up on your screen. You will be that person who pays full price.

Another person might take time to change the departure and arrival dates and maybe even the airport to find the lowest price possible for their trip. This person wants to get there and back again and spend the least amount. Others will search for discounts that are offered off season, when the crowds are not around.

Then there are those who can take advantage of the last minute deals that can be really cheap. If you are one of those people who can just hop on a flight at the last minute, then you have searched for late holidays and found many great deals. Late availability plans can save you big bucks and this is certain to put a smile on this traveler’s face.

Remember the adage, You never know someone until you work with them or live with them? There’s a third: You never really know someone until you travel with them. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. So how to avoid the potential pitfalls of finding yourself on vacation with a companion you’d like to toss into the sea? Here are a few tips for building, or saving, a friendship.

First off we have friends of all sorts in our lives – some are great to have a drink and catch up with; others are the kind that will be there to help you move out of your flat. To say “never the two shall meet” is not exactly fair but when planning a holiday it’s very important to take a step outside the excitement of possibilities and look at the realities of how you and your friend each travel. Do you prefer to plan everything out and be prepared as possible, while your pal chafes at having anything set in stone? Is your friend’s idea of hell a shopping excursion, which is one of your favorite things? Each could stand as a warning bell.

It’s not to say that you have to possess completely compatible travelling styles but the biggies should be addressed: What do you both consider “acceptable” accommodations? Do you both like going to museums and art galleries? How independent do you each hope to be? Do you enjoy a pint at the pub, yet plan on combining holidays in the UK with your teetotaler American pal?

And as trite as it may seem, is buddy Frank a glass half-empty or half-full kind of mate? Travelling involves traversing the unknown, both geographically and psychologically – so if you’re one to laugh it off and “make lemonade”, while buddy Frank prefers to stew, you could both be in for a vacation from hell. So pick a friend with common interests and/or a similar travelling style and by journey’s end you’ll most likely be better friends than ever. Good travelling and good luck!

We often think of discount things as something that’s of lesser quality than something that’s more expensive. And if that may be true for some things, for others it’s a matter of choice. And choosing the least expensive option, especially the one that still offers a quality product, is something that’s becoming increasingly common in this economy. For it is true that often products that are too cheap can have terrible quality – the old saying that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true – but there are companies offering products and packages that have a similar quality to the more expensive ones, but for some reason come at a cheaper price.

Take car rental companies, for example. The large car rental companies offer a quality product. They have a large fleet of cars and keep them in good shape, and the fact that they have counters all over the world makes them a convenient place to rent a car from. But cheap car hire companies can offer a similar package, but be able to offer reduced prices for a number of reasons. It’s really a matter of looking around and finding what is best for you.

Drive around England

Discovering England, the land of contrasts, is better done by car, no question about that. Whether you want to take a tour of the biggest cities like London, Liverpool or Manchester or you’d rather just take a quick shopping tour of London and then hop around the English countryside, than you’re better off using your own means of transport than being a slave to public transport. Not that public transport is especially bad in England, it’s not perfect either, but it’s perfectly average. In fact, you’re probably better off using public transport in London than driving around, especially if you’re renting a car. A car hire company in London will have a much higher rate than, let’s say, an Essex car hire firm. So perhaps the best option is to wait until you’re a little further from London to rent your vehicle, as long as you make sure you’re close enough to public transport for when you have to make it back to London, assuming you’ve flown in through Heathrow. There’s a sense of freedom when you drive around a country like England that you’ll not really experience anywhere else in the World and you really need to see it for yourself to understand why.

Stay somewhere fabulous

It’s something that hopefully doesn’t happen very often, but nobody’s immune to being in that situation. Being in a town where you are forced to spend the night, by one reason or another, and you haven’t booked a hotel room, again, for one reason or another. This has happened to me once when I was on my way to a music festival and the bus that was “guaranteed” to take everyone to the site broke down about halfway. All that we could do was take another bus to a nearby town and spend the night there. Unfortunately, when we arrived everything was booked solid, except for the 4 or 5 star hotel. Cheap luxury hotels are something that’s hard to find anywhere, and we weren’t lucky enough to find one there.

Like all things in life there was, of course, a silver lining. Luxury hotels tend to charge you a lot more than the old mom and pop hostel down the road, but you do get more bang for your buck. And they happened to cater to people who were staying at the hotel and going to the festival by offering a free shuttle to the festival site. So that turned out fine and we managed to save on the taxi fare.

When you travel, there are many things to think about and one that should merit your concern is how to safeguard your luggage while you are on your trip.
